My natural skincare routine

After battling cystic/hormonal acne for the past year, I think I have finally nailed it!! In the past, my skin has been relatively clear. Sometimes I wouldn't even wash my skin at night, and if I got a zit, it would usually be a tiny that popped up maybe once a month. About a year ago I got off of birth control pills, and within a month my skin was a WRECK! I quickly went back on the pill, but my skin has never been the same since going off it for a month.

I tried literally EVERYTHING on the market. I spent probably hundreds and hundreds of dollars on everything from Proactiv, Murad, Neutrogena, and everything else offering clear, smooth skin. I even used Retin A micro and Tazorac (prescription creams) from a dermatologist. Don't get me wrong, my skin was NEVER horrible, even at it's worst ( If you have really bad skin, I recommend seeing a dermatologist first) but even one zit is one too many for me.

Despite buying all these expensive creams and potions, my skin got worse! Now, not only did I have breakouts, but my skin got very dry and flakey, drawing attention to the bad areas of my face. Also, the breakouts that I got were not the kind that dry up and go away in a couple of days. These were cysts (hormonal acne) that sometimes lasted WEEKS! After getting THREE cysts one day, I was seriously fed up and considering going to the dermatologist for something drastic. I decided to do some research and look up natural cures. After browsing the internet for a couple of hours I came up with a "routine" for myself. I've been on it for the past three weeks and since then I've gotten ZERO cysts and just one little zit (that popped up yesterday and is already almost gone!). I'm not saying this is a miracle cure, and I'm sure it won't work for me, but if you've tried everything and nothing has worked, it doesn't help to try. Also, it's CHEAP!!! It focuses on cleaning out your system from the inside, because I really believe that any skin problems are a result of bad diet or hormonal imbalances. Okay, so here it is. Please comment if you have any added suggestions, or if you're going to give it a try let me know your results!! I also have some natural skin recipes I'll post throughout the week.

1. The key is to drink morning and night an 8 ounce glass of hot water with either the juice of half a lemon or 2 teaspoons Bragg's organic apple cider vinegar with some RAW honey to sweeten. I let it cool a bit, and then drink it really fast with a straw, because the acid is bad for your teeth.

This is really good to add to your skincare routine because it helps detoxify your body and gives your skin a glow.

2. Not only do I drink apple cider vinegar, I apply it to my face! I use the same Bragg's ACV and use it as a toner for my face. I dilute 1/2 apple cider vinegar with 1/2 distilled water and apply it to my face after cleansing. This really disinfects and helps fade old acne scars. Sometimes though, this is way too strong for me, so lately I've been using 1/4 apple cider vinegar with 3/4 water. I say test it out and see which one you prefer. If you have sensitive or dry skin, go with the 1/4. If you have oily or normal skin, go with the 1/2 ACV.

3. Next, If I do have a zit, or want to prevent it, I put on LOTS of benzoyl peroxide. I put a layer on and make sure it's completely rubbed into the skin and absorbed. Then, I repeat this about 5 or 6 times. After about 15 minutes, I apply pure jojoba oil on my face, so that the benzoyl peroxide will not dry it out. Even after using the benzoyl peroxide, my skin does not flake or dry out, and my skin is VERY sensitive! I also follow up with my regular moisturizer, since jojoba oil is not moisturizing enough for me.

4. I also made a few adjustments to my diet. I COMPLETELY cut out milk. I used to drink about 2 cups a day or organic milk. Now, I only drink soymilk or almond milk. Even organic milk has a lot of added hormones, and cutting off milk and replacing it with an alternative has not only helped my skin, but I believe is much healthier for me in the long run. I also limit my cheese intake and try not to eat as much cheese as I used to. If you can cut out all dairy though, and replace it with other calcium alternatives, it may be more beneficial.

5. Lastly, I've been taking a few supplements. It's important to always take supplements with food, and never on an empty stomach. The supplements I've been taking are ZINC (this one is REALLY good at helping skin out), fish oil (i take about 6 pills a day), evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil, and Vitamin B12. I think that the zinc, fish oil, and evening primrose oil is the most important ones to take.

That was long, but I hope it helped someone! I've even gotten my brother to follow my same routine since he's seen my skin is so much better!

Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover and Cleanser double packs 90% off at CVS!

Hurry and run to your local CVS!!!! Neutrogena eye makeup remover, eye makeup remover pads, and facial cleanser double packs are 90% off!! This is my absolute favorite eye makeup remover! It really does a great job of getting rid of stubborn eye makeup, all the while being really gentle. The One Step Gentle Cleanser is also AWESOME! I wasn't too fond of the makeup removing pads, but some may like it. If you have a CVS, definitely stop by and check it out! Remember, it's only the specially marked double packs. The cleanser and pads are only 99 cents for TWO! and the liquid eye makeup remover is only 79 cents for TWO!! That's too great a deal to pass up!! I'm actually embarrassed at how many I snagged, I won't say, but I cleared out the 3 CVS's in Santa Monica. I think I have at least a 5 year supply of eye makeup remover and face wash. =)

Free FULL SIZE eye cream @ Sephora w/ purchase

Sephora is doing yet another hard to resist beauty freebie! Just enter code BEAUTYSLEEP and get a free FULL SIZE Cosmedicine eye cream w/ ANY skincare purchase! Retails for $48! I'm definitely going to have to pick up a skincare product. For the past two months, my skin has been acting REALLY crazy!! One week it's really clear and looks good, and the next week I'll break out in those painful under the skin cysts, rinse and repeat. Blah! So, I'm testing out a skincare regimen that focuses on cleaning out my skin internally, as well as some natural products. So far, so good!!! If in a month my skin has improved, I'll post my regimen for all! To note, I have combination skin that tends to be flakey and breaks out every once in awhile, but lately my skin has been uber dry and flakey and breaking out with cysts (those HUGE under the skin zits- the worst ones to have!). Anyways, I'm hoping that I've found a holy grail skincare routine to share! Wish me luck!

Self Makeover

As part of my NY's resolution this year, I've decided to start taking better care of myself and putting more of an effort into my appearance. Before, I used to totally be absorbed with makeup, fashion, and all things beauty. I still am, but I just don't look like I am anymore ;) I can't remember when the last time I experimented with my hair or makeup was. I'm stuck in a beauty rut!!! I have traincases full of makeup, a closet overbrimming with cute clothes, and practically enough hair and skincare products to open up a mini-Sephora. Yet, I wear the same makeup everyday (and a rather boring daily makeup look it is, I must admit), and tend to throw on whatever is the most comfy, which usually doesn't equal the most stylish. My beloved Hai iron has been gathering dust as well, since my hair tends to be pulled up into a sloppy ponytail or else is down and unruly.

I discovered the makeover section on http://www.self.com/, and it's pretty awesome! They have the "One Month Makeover" (health), "31 Days to a More Gorgeous You","Do Good, Feel Good", "In 30 Days you Can Get Organized", and "31 Days to Great Sex." The tips are definitely not mindblowing, but taking the effort to read each daily tip is basically a daily reminder to take care of yourself.

So, as part of my resolution to take better care of myself, today I *finally* got my eyebrows waxed! I had previously went to the famous Anastacia's in Beverly Hills, but was not completely impressed. I grew out my brows for a few months (eek!), and was planning on going back to Anastacia's, but the thought of driving to Beverly Hills and having to wait didn't appeal to me. So, I just dropped by a local waxing salon in Westwood. I'm pretty happy with the results, and may just tweak it a little bit. I have never used eye brow pencil or powder before, so if anyone has any recs, please post! I'll post before and after pictures tomorrow! Then, on Thursday I'm off to cut and dye my hair!! I cannot wait!!

Sephora Beauty Insider Freebies!

From now until February 15, go into any Sephora store counter and simply tell the cashier that you are a Beauty Insider and that you'd like the bag of skincare samples that started January 6th. I've done this twice already with no problems. Each store is different, but my bag contained:

2 sample packets of Lab Skincare for Men cleanser and SPF 20

.17oz tube of Fresh High Noon FreshFace Glow

.28 box of Clarins Sunscreen Smoothing Cream w/ Progressive tanning.

Boscia Enlivening Amino-AG Eye Treatment packet

Dr. Brandt Pore No More packet

Ole Henricksen Visual Truth Eye Cream packet

Cosmedicine Primary Care Multi-Tasking Moisturizer w. SPF 20

I absolutely LOVE samples, and this is awesome because no purchase is required. Also, you can tell them you also received an email about the Cosmedicine Opti-Mologist eye cream sample and they'll give you a sample tube. Picked one up as well :) They also have tons of other samples behind the counter, so I'm sure you could ask for whatever you want.

Also, if you register online to become a Beauty Insider, on your birthday you get an email that you print out and bring to Sephora to get a free 1.7 ounce tube of Bliss Naked Body Butter. This stuff is really nice, but pricey, so free is always appreciated!

Enjoy!

Here are some items I stocked up on. These items are PERFECT for a natural, yet flawless makeup look. I am constantly complimented on how "flawless" my skin is, but trust me, my skin is everything but flawless!!! It's just that these products give me the ultimate smooth canvas and healthy glow. First:

Apply Lancome Effarcernes to your undereye area, blemishes, or areas with discoloration. This is so incredibly light and natural, yet covers very well. You can layer and easily build up coverage for a light, but covered look. If I need more coverage or am having a super bad skin day, I smooth on Cover Girl Advanced Radiance makeup foundation with a damp sponge and then put the Effacernes on top. Then, I dust on Lancome Absolue Radiant Smoothing Powder. This is pricey, but worth it for flawless skin! You can find it cheaper on www.ebay.com or if you get lucky at your local Cosmetic Company Outlet. This powder is soooo luxurious and smooth! I hate the chalky, cakey look that some powders give. And lately my skin has been soo dry, so if I use the wrong powder, it accentuates wrinkles I didn't even know I had!! This makes my skin absolutely luminous and glowing.

After putting on the Lancome powder, I sweep Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess along my temples, cheeks, chin, and forehead. I don't use the brush that it comes with, but a bigger blush brush. This is my absolute Holy Grail blush (MAC Golden Bronze comes in a close second). I have paley skin, so this gives me a faux glow without the harmful effects of the sun. This also would look fabulous on tan skin as well, since it can be layered and is a beautiful rich color. I hate bronzers that look red or muddy, but this is just a beautiful golden brown with very fine shimmer.

After applying bronzer, I sweep some Nars Orgasm on the apples of my cheek. This gives an instant healthy flush and is a great contrast to the instant tan you just acquired from the Bronze Goddess. It is seriously an orgasm in a flip-top case!! This universal blush would seriously look amazing on anyone. It's the perfect peachy pink glow that impacts instance radiance! Try it and you will not be disappointed!

Then, I usually curl lashes, apply mascara, and do whatever eye makeup I feel like doing (which is usually minimal, unless I'm going out for the night). After that, I finish off my look with a Lancome Juicy Tube. One of my favorites in Honey Violet, which gives the sexiest flush to your lips. These glosses smell terrific (I've had a few smell like Fruity Pebbles! yum!) and they give the glossiest shine. I steer clear of the ones that are too sheer (because who wants to pay $17.50 for a clear gloss?), but the ones that have pigment are gorgeous. All you have to do is slick on your lips, and you can reapply as you wish.
Tada, and there you have an easy, natural makeup look! I hope I gave you some suggestions if you plan on splurging and getting some stuff from Nordies to get the free gift. I picked up an Effacernes concealer, Absolue Powder (to stock up!), and a Juicy tube. Don't forgot to put in code COOL or WARM for your free Lancome gift!

CVS Deals from 10/7-10/13- free Johnson's SoftLotion

Oh, how I love CVS. CVS definitely rivals Target as one of my favorite places to get good deals. If you're not familiar with CVS, they have an Extra Care Card, which is free and easy to sign up for. Once you get your card, you can start doing deals! CVS has something called "ECB" or Extra Care Bucks, which are basically money back that prints on your receipt everytime you buy an eligible product. You can use these ECB to buy anything in the store. You can also "roll ECBs" which is what I do. "Rolling ECBs" is when you initially buy something that has ECBs, and then you use those ECBs to buy other items that give ECBs and so on, so you never have to spend money. CVS also ALWAYS has awesome printable money off coupons. They currently have a $4 off $20 and a $2 off $10 printable coupon. If anyone has any questions on CVS, feel free to email me.

This week at CVS, you can get Johnsons SoftLotion products for FREE* (*after coupon and ECB)! These products are sooo soothing, and at free, the price is right. I'm currently using SoftLotion, and it smells delicious. It has a soothing scent that feels really gentle and makes my skin baby soft. CVS has them for $5.49 right now, plus there's a $4 printable coupon here:

Print 1, then press back twice and print another so you have 2 coupons. If you buy the SoftLotion, you get $2 ECB to spend. The coupons are for Melt Away Stress items, but they scan for any Johnsons Melt Away Stress, SoftLotion, or Johnsons product. So, if you buy 2, that's about $11.50 or so with tax- $8 (2 coupons)= $3.50 and then you get back $4 to spend on anything. Or, you can buy one, then use the ECB that prints immediately to buy the second.

Here are some other good deals this week at CVS in case you want to add another $8 so you can use a $4 off $20 coupon (if you want this coupon, email me and I will send it to you. Some stores let you use as many of these as you have, others only let you use 1 per transaction):

Clean and Clear Products: Spend $15 get $5 ECB

*Use a $2 coupon per item here: http://www.cleanandclear.com/cool-stuff.jsp

PlayTex tampons 16-20ct $4.99 (get $3 ECB)

Colgate Total Advanced Clean 4.2 oz. or MaxFresh Burst 4 oz. $2.99 get $2 EB

Crest Pro-Health Night toothpaste 4.2 oz. or rinse 250 ml. $3.29 get $3.29

(so this comes out FREE)

Palmolive Dish Soap $1.49 get $1 ECB

Happy shopping!!!

Out to lunch OOTD

"Out to Lunch" OOTD

Wearing:

White embroidered front racer back tank from Libertine for Target

Brown chunky belt from Target (do you see a trend here? I love Target!
Dark denim Citizens of Humanity jeans (these are my oldie but goodie pair)
Gold bangle bracelets from Forevever 21.
Joey O (from Nordies) brown/brown heels

I had a simple day doing some work and grabbed lunch at one of my favorite lunch spots: California Chicken Cafe. For you gals on the Westside, this place is delicious and healthy. It's a little pricey (a salad and a drink come out to $10.00), but it's big enough to easily share with a friend (which I did). So for $5 a person, it's actually a great deal.

Since I was casual today and didn't really have anything planned, I wore my basic outfit- a white tee or tank, belt, and jeans. My weakness are white tops. I think nothing looks hotter on a girl than a plain white tee and jeans, so I'm always looking for new white tops with details or accessories that looks awesome with jeans and a tee. If you've seen any around, please email me so I can add to my white tee collection!! I think a girl can never have too many lipglosses, earrings, shoes, jeans, and in my case, white tees!

Stay tuned tomorrow for another OOTD and a hot deal. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to have a post where readers can post their own OOTD and deals.

Cheap Kashi Cereal and Free Clorox @ TARGET!

I absolutely *adore* Target. They have everything that you could possibly want, all at incredibly low budget-friendly prices. Whenever I go there (usually to check out a new clothing collection or pick up a product) I always come out with a cartful of goodies. I just can't help myself. Target definitely has the Costco effect- you can't leave spending less than $100. However, this week you can add two goodies to your basket that won't hurt your wallet.
Clorox AnyWhere Sanitizing Spray

Target has this for about $2.84, and there's a $3 printable coupon here:
It will say that you already printed it, just click NEXT. Then, simply send the coupon to your email, open it up, and print. Again, hit the back button a couple times to print a second one. You can only print 2 per computer, so if you are a computer nerd and have multiple computers or have many friends, then you're in luck. But, if not, don't worry, I'm sure 2 will be enough to keep your place clean until I post another free cleaning supply deal :) Use this at Target and you can get it free and make some change while you're at it, or pick it up at Ralphs, CVS, or your local drug store. It's usually under $3 a bottle.

Cheap KASHI Go Lean Crunch!

Target has the Kashi TLC Crackers and assorted Kashi Cereals on sale for $2.50 this week (my Target had the cereal for $2.40). There's a $2 printable coupon here:

Or you can try this direct link:

Go to "Get a Coupon", print once, hit back button, print a second time. You can also have them send the coupon to your house, so you can get a total of 3 coupons.

NOTE: The coupon is for the TLC Crackers, but it ALSO works on the cereal (I used it fine at my Target, it scanned perfectly). So, depending on your Target, you can get either 2 boxes of cereal or crackers for 80 cents-$1. Kashi cereal is yummers too and has 8 grams of fiber per serving! :yummy: So a deal that's good for your budget and good for your health!

If anyone knows of any other good Target deals, email me and I'll add it!

EDIT: I fixed the Clorox coupon in case anyone was having trouble with it! If you still have problems, let me know.

OOTD (Outfit of the Day)

This is my *First* oufit of the day ever, so please bear with me. Some outfits of the day will feature me wearing them, while others will be laid out (like todays!)
I accidently left my purse and shoes downstairs, so you'll just have to visualize it. I'm really into simple and basic pieces, with some accessories or bold items thrown in to mix it up a bit. I tend to buy really cheap basic items (think Forever 21, Old Navy, H&M, etc) and then splurge on more detailed items, such as purses, jeans, and coats. My style icons are celebrities such as Kate Moss, Elizabeth Hurley, Audrey Hepburn, and so on. You get the picture. But I'll go (way) more in depth in a future post.
Today's OOTD was just a simple and comfy look for a day doing some tedious errands.

Wearing:

Black tube dress from F21 (I *adore* these! I have one in white as well. It's soooo comfy and looks very dressy and chic with heels, or casual over jeans or with some flipflops. It also has a sort of built in bra so you don't have to worry about having a nip slip :)
Olive/Gold necklace from a vendor in NY
Black cuff bracelet with gold stones from Limited (that I got *free* w/ a coupon they had a couple of weeks ago)
Gold beaded sequin flip flops from Old Navy (not pictured)
LV bag (not pictured)

Stay tuned for another OOTD tomorrow and a Target deal.
